Spicy Tofu Dish

Growing up, my grandma and dad would make the best tofu dish ever. The original dish is called “Ma Po Tofu.” I asked my dad how to make this and I was surprised at how easy it was. I, of course, added a little this and that to make it my own, and to make this dish a spicy one! It instantly takes me back to my childhood.I originally didn’t intend to add meat to this dish, but I had a package of ground turkey in the fridge. So in this case, meat is optional! Either way, if you’re in need of a big bowl of comfort then a big bowl of Spicy Tofu is exactly what you need!

Here is what you’ll need:

  • 1 package of firm tofu
  • ¼ lb ground turkey (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 tsp garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp ginger, minced
  • 1 jalapeno, minced
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp oyster sauce
  • 2 tsp cornstarch (using as much as you need to reach desired consistency)
  • 1 green onion, chopped
  • 1/3 cup water or broth, if needed

Heat oil in a large wok and add in pepper flakes, garlic and ginger. Saute for 1 minute on medium heat. Add in ground turkey – stir fry until cooked.

Add in the cubed tofu, jalapeno, salt, soy sauce and oyster sauce.

Bring the mixture to a soft boil. If you feel like there isn’t enough liquid or want more ‘sauce’, add a bit of water or broth.

Slowly add cornstarch until the consistency is right.

Mix in green onions.

Serve over brown rice, quinoa or chow mein noodles.
