I’d like a burger please, but hold the meat! Wait, what? Yeah, you heard that right. Every so often — okay, maybe more than just often — I crave a really good veggie burger! Tonight, I decided to take a chance on making homemade black bean burgers and kudos to me for trying because they were so ohhhh my gawddd delicious! By the looks of it, it can totally pass off as a meaty burger to me.
And what’s a burger (or anything) without a little heat? That said, this Spicy Black Bean Burger has a little kick to it. Plus, I found a jar of Famous Dave’s spicy pickles at the grocery store the other day which is the PERFECT compliment.
Here is what you’ll need:
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 cans reduced-sodium black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 orange bell pepper, minced
- 1/2 cup sweet onions, minced
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
- 1 Tbsp chipotle hot sauce
- 1 Tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes
- Salt and pepper
- Burger buns (I used slim sandwich buns)
- Spicy pickles
Begin by pouring black beans into a large bowl. With a fork, mash mash mash! Add red bell pepper, onions, egg, breadcrumbs, hot sauce and seasonings. Mix until everything is completely combined.
Form into 6 medium patties — place on a baking sheet and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
When ready, heat oil in a medium pan over medium heat. Cook burgers for 6 minutes on each side until browned. Build your burger with the toppings of your choice — enjoy!
