Tired of the Gym? There’s an Alternative to That.

Crowded areas. Huffing and puffing. Lifting weights next to ‘that guy.’ Do any of these fit your reasons for not wanting to go to the gym?

A solid workout doesn’t have to include a monthly membership fee or heavy equipment. Seriously, though. If you have a pair of pumped up kicks, a set of free weights and a killer playlist — I’d say you’re already ahead of the game. Okay, having a yoga and/or medicine ball and a workout mat wouldn’t hurt either!

I’m on a daily workout routine that’s working great for me; yes, it is in the gym. And yes, I do love the gym. But, what about the days when I”m just not feelin’ up for it, or when there just isn’t enough time in the day?  

Memorial Day weekend killed me with food – an obscene amount of indulging calls for a good workout. Since I’m still slowly getting back into the routine of reality, I can get the burn I normally get at the gym in the comforts of my own home — my living room to be exact. You can do the same! Today, I’m opting for the ‘ab and butt’ workout on the Nike Training Club app. You’ve heard me rave about it in the past, and I’m still raving about it to just about everyone I know!

All you need is a smartphone device or tablet, and you’re good to go. I also have a HDMI lightening cable that let’s me hook it up to the TV. It’s like having a personal trainer to coach me through my entire workout! If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, YouTube videos (e.g. Laura London, Tiffany Rothe) workout DVDs (e.g. Jillian Michaels, Tracy Anderson) or simple routines that require minimal equipment (e.g. yoga, back to the basics: lunges, squats, crunches) work great too! I like to switch it up a bit with yoga, pilates, and strength training.  Your home is the cheapest gym out there.

Remember, your body loves variety. And also remember, a well-balanced diet is just as important as a solid workout routine.

Okay, so what if your environment preference is to get out and avoid being stuck indoors? Take your endurance and energy to the great outdoors! Instead of running on a treadmill like a hamster on a wheel, head to the nearest park, nature trail, high school track (or bleachers), or just around the block. The weather is starting to get beautiful so might as well enjoy the scenery and an abundance of fresh air!

We all get in a gym rut sometimes, but don’t let that prevent you from getting the exercise your body needs. Regardless of where your workout takes place, you must always remember to… stretch before AND after your workout, stay hydrated, and breathe. Namaste.
