Peanut Butter Chocolate Protein Shake

Peanut Butter Chocolate Protein Shake

Have you ever heard the saying, “I rather drink my calories”? Sometimes that can be true for me… I said sometimes. I’m such a sucker for smoothies — whether it’s green or berries or anything in between. But the good thing is that these healthy smoothies aren’t something to feel guilty about or count calories over. My typical morning starts off with my base green smoothie: spinach, kale, chard, pineapple, mango, fresh ginger, chia seeds, flax seeds, ice and cold water (and sometimes a little matcha). But the thing about green smoothies, to me at least, is that I really want them to be SUPER green so I avoid putting in anything that may alter the color, and my go-to protein powder is chocolate flavored so that just does not work either.

So I recently purchased a new protein powder for my smoothie and drink add-ins! This time, it’s a plant-based product — gluten free, no sugar added, non-GMO. This vanilla flavored Vega Protein & Greens Drink Mix is made from real, whole food ingredients and contains the equivalent of two servings of greens.

Ingredients: Vega Protein Blend (pea protein, SaviSeed [sacha inchi] protein, hemp seed protein, sprouted whole grain brown rice protein), natural French vanilla flavors, Vega Green Blend (organic alfalfa grass powder, spinach powder, broccoli powder, organic kale powder), papaya concentrate powder (contains naturally occurring enzymes), stevia leaf extract, xanthan gum.

It’s ideal for those “non-green” smoothies without sacrificing the greens. The product claims that “nutrition on-the-go will feel–and taste!–like a piece of cake” and quite frankly, they’re not kidding. My smoothies literally taste like a dessert… and I don’t feel guilty whatsoever. Who knew I would opt for vanilla? I’m usually not a super sweet kinda gal. My usual go-to protein powder is  Optimum Nutrition Natural Oats & Whey which is a great combo with the vanilla!

For my first taste test with this new product, I added a few of my favorite things. Everything goes into my NutriBullet Rx and within seconds I have a shake that could be deemed a “cheat day” shake… I’m not even exaggerating when I say that it reminds me of a Reese’s peanut butter cup. Some reviews have mentioned that it isn’t easily dissolved, has a gritty texture or that the aftertaste is not all that great. I’ll argue for the other side because it was perfect in my smoothie!

But how you prepare it makes a huge difference — regardless of the protein I use, the consistency can vary if I’m making it in my NutriBullet vs blender bottle, you know?

It’s so easy to prepare, and makes for a perfect breakfast on-the-go, midday snack or post-workout shake. I’ve been swapping my usual breakfast (and lunch) for a shake this week… and have been satisfied until dinner! I’m so excited to experiment a little more with different flavors… more to come!
